Denis Napthine must explain why he attempted to influence Racing Victoria’s decision not to allow bookmaker Rob Waterhouse to work the rails at Warrnambool’s May Racing Carnival.

Gai Waterhouse, wife of Rob Waterhouse, is headlining a $100 Liberal Fundraiser at Warrnambool Racecourse on 30 April.

Denis Napthine, as Racing Minister, has ultimate responsibility for the regulation of the racing industry.

It is also the case that Gai Waterhouse is a serving licensed trainer with many runners in Victoria and an increasing presence in this state.

Her family is heavily involved in bookmaking, an industry over which Denis Napthine also has significant influence.

Quotes attributable to Mr Pakula:

For the Racing Minister to involve Gai Waterhouse in a party political endeavour—a fundraiser for himself, demonstrates arrogance and bad judgement on his part.

“It does not matter if Gai Waterhouse is happy to do it; Denis Napthine ought to
know better than to put her in that position.

“Denis Napthine clearly fails to appreciate that perceptions are everything in an
industry that has no future without the highest levels of integrity.

“This incident demonstrates why the Racing Minister was so foolish to involve a
licensed trainer in his party political fundraising activities.”
